I know I am always banging on about associativity and solid models, in fact on one occasion I got so excited I did a post on it and a video.
When we design and produce jigs and fixtures for your work holding at the CNC Training Centre this really comes into play.

The great thing about using a CAD CAM system for design and manufacture of fixtures is that everything can be checked before any metal is cut.
- Tooling and workholding devices.
- Weight calculations and balancing.
- Clamping system and work gripping.
- Clearances between parts.
- Machining problems, vibration and clearances.
- Swarf evacuation.
- Cycle time can be calculated.
Oh by the way if you don’t know what a solid model is. Don’t worry there is no need to be ashamed (a little embarrassed maybe). Anyway just take a sly look at this video.
So a full design can be created and modelled on the actual machine that you will be using. Everything can then be fully simulated and tested. You as a customer get to see the whole process and then alterations and adjustments can be made.

Here is a typical work holding design concept. The main idea of this fixture design was to see how many parts could be fitted on the table of the machine. The clamping system can also be worked out.
When taken through to Edgecam the machine stroke and potential tooling could be worked out.
All that was needed was to circular mill the bores of the parts and produce the chamfers. We needed to get as much product as possible on to the table. This was also used to estimate the final cycle time. It is often crucial to customers to have an accurate cycle time before committing to investment in a machine or a turnkey project,
