Your programming requirements can change dramatically. You may just need to deal with an overload. You might decide that you don’t want to do any programmes onsite as your demand is too sporadic to justify employing an in-house programmer.
Please don’t fall into the trap of thinking that a good setter operator will make a good programmer.
CNC Programming
- Code from a CAD system must include canned cycles so that should you want to you can easily edit it on the machine. Lots of CAD programmes are all longhand so machine editing is a nightmare.
- Safe consistent code with all the relevant modal information in each tool call.
- Well commented code for easy reading and prove out.
- Clear well laid out code is easy to read and easy to prove out and follow (here is an article about this).
There are many programming systems built into machine tools and some of them are excellent. But the big thing to consider is weather you can afford to have your £90,000 investment standing while someone programmes it. If it’s programmed in cycle are you really producing as many parts as you would if you concentrated your efforts to cutting metal.
In a one off tool-room type environment these systems work fantastically and I am sure there are companies very happy with this system. My personal opinion is that your machine tool should be cutting metal from dawn to dusk and nothing else. Fully capitalise your investment.
